How does Amavida prepare for hurricane season?
Amavida takes a comprehensive approach to hurricane preparedness, with detailed emergency plans, annual full-scale preparedness drills, backup power, emergency supplies and dedicated staffing. The community maintains at least a seven-day supply of food, water and medical necessities and coordinates with partner pharmacies to help ensure residents have critical medications available. During a storm, essential team members remain on-site to support residents and maintain services.
Does Amavida evacuate or shelter in place during hurricanes?
Amavida is designed and equipped to safely shelter in place during severe hurricanes, helping reduce the need for stressful last-minute evacuations in most scenarios. The community includes designated shelter spaces engineered to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, along with reinforced construction, impact-resistant windows and doors, backup power and emergency supplies. Amavida also has established emergency and evacuation protocols should conditions require a different response.
How does Amavida prepare for extended power outages?
Amavida has four commercial-grade hurricane generators—three serving the main building and one serving the Oasis building. The generators are designed to maintain critical systems during an outage, including HVAC and climate control, refrigeration for food and medications, medical equipment, elevators, emergency lighting and communications. Team members remain on-site during hurricanes to monitor these systems and respond to residents’ needs.
What hurricane-resistant safety features does Amavida have?
Amavida was designed with multiple layers of storm protection. The community includes shelter space engineered to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, impact-resistant windows and doors, reinforced concrete and cinder block construction, and an elevation of 15 feet above sea level to provide additional protection from storm surge and flooding. Backup generators and emergency communication systems provide additional safeguards during severe weather.
How does Amavida keep families informed during a hurricane?
Amavida begins communicating with families when a storm enters the cone of uncertainty and provides updates before, during and after the storm. Communications may include web updates, text and email, with backup channels available if local phone or power infrastructure is disrupted. After the storm passes, families receive updates about resident safety and the community’s return to normal operations.
