When is it time to look at senior living communities?

senior living communities

The decision to move to an assisted living or a memory care community is usually prompted by a defining moment. It is when an older adult or their family becomes aware that more help is needed. Do not wait until the moment is, an emergency, begin when the first signs are manageable. The question of, where do we get the help we need is often asked? At amavida we strive to provide not only a beautiful environment but a secure, supportive and enriching environment for all our residents.

We recognize this is a big decision and one that is not to be made without planning. Wither you are the future resident or you are helping a loved one, here are a few things to consider before making the move.

The first thing to do before planning your move is to find the community that best suits your current needs as well as any future forecasted ones.

Start by knowing the area you most want to live in – we suggest a 5 to 10 mile radius, to start. There are many different types of senior communities; different sizes, offering different services and amenities, so do not go everywhere. Call ahead and ask if they have what you are looking for. Distance to family and friends who will visit, locations of primary doctors, social and faith organization remain important.

Call, schedule and plan to visit the communities, you find that have the services you need and the amenities want. For example; do you need help with medication management to include insulin? And do you want the community to have a pool and an art studio?

During the visit, there are many things that can help determine the ideal community: Before you go, know what is important to you or your loved one. Stay focused on those most important topics. This is your tour. Ask for what you want to see and know about.
